Does the Firm Hire First-Year Students?

While the primary focus of our summer program is on second-year students, we do occasionally hire outstanding first-year students. First-year students should apply directly to the firm as soon as they have received their first semester grades.

Does the Firm Hire Summer Associates as Associates?

Yes! Our summer associates are our primary source of new associates. We intentionally keep our summer program smaller than most firms. Our approach is to encourage cooperation and collegiality, not competition, between summer associates. Therefore, offers are noncompetitive and are extended on the basis of each clerk's performance. Historically, most of our summer associates have received offers to join the firm, and most of those who have received offers have joined the firm upon graduation.

Does the Firm Allow Split Summers?

There is no set start or end date for clerkships, and start and end dates can be tailored to meet the needs of each clerk. However, we prefer that summer associates spend the entire summer at VanCott so that they can work with as many attorneys and practice groups as possible. Split summers with another firm will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

What Kind of Assignments Will I Receive?

One of the benefits of clerking at VanCott is the wide variety of real world experiences available. Assignments are as varied as the practice groups at the firm. Summer associates are not assigned to a particular practice area, though they may express a preference for certain types of work, based on the needs of the firm. Generally, summer associates are exposed to a wide variety of experiences in different practice areas to help them see where they might best fit in at VanCott. Summer associates may conduct legal research, draft memos, pleadings, contracts, or correspondence, perform due diligence, or assist in virtually any other lawyering activity.

How Much Does the Firm Pay? What is the Billables Requirement?

The firm pays competitively with other large Salt Lake firms. The firm will also pay for parking or a transit pass.

Associates are expected to bill 1,800 hours annually. Up to 75 hours of approved pro bono activity can be applied toward the 1,800 hours. Hours logged above the 1,800 budget, result in an increased annual bonus. There is no minimum billable hour requirement for summer associates.

What Kind of Clients Does the Firm Represent?

Our firm serves a broad array of local, regional, and national businesses, as well as individuals, nonprofit entities, and governmental units.

Where are the offices?

VanCott has three offices located in Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Park City, Utah – each strategically located to service our clients.
